Lifestyles and Mental Health

Mental health is more important than physical health. Of course, you may not think that if you are having a heart attack. The good thing about Western medicine is that it works really well for trauma. If you need to be saved right now, it can possibly save you. As far as helping you avoid illness, it gets no kudos. Preventative medicine is the single most important medicine we can take and it usually tastes pretty good.

We need to take care of our mental health. There are scientific facts out there that can prove that we cause our own illnesses by the way we think, believe and how we take care of our bodies and our brains. You have heard the age-old saying " laughter is good medicine". It is true. People have healed themselves time and time again by changing the way they think and feel about their situations and by injecting lightheartedness and laughter into their lives.

People! We really need to take care of our stress levels. We are killing ourselves by not giving ourselves enough time to do the things we have committed to do and by just doing too much in general. We are killing ourselves by not planning our lives better. We do not need to buy a house that is too expensive for us. We do not need to have our car payments so high that we have to work two jobs. When we get in that deep our personal lives are jeopardized and our relationships become fractured and impersonal. We rush from place to place and meet ourselves coming back. Where is the fun in that? Where is the joy in life? And how long does it take for us to lose our health both physically and mentally?

I have raised my children and now I observe them as adults with families of their own. They are in the rat race. Knowing what I know now, it is difficult to watch. I thought I was a little forgetful. I am over fifty now, so I give myself an excuse. But my sons and their friends have no good excuse to lock themselves out of their cars and forget to pick up milk at the store.

If I had to live my life over again, I would live in a smaller house and be at home more often to be with my children. We would spend time picnicking at the park, kicking soccer balls and hiking. I would teach my sons how to make pancakes and paper airplanes. I would paint their bedrooms their favorite colors. I would sit on the floor with them and paint flowers with finger paint. We would make cookies and eat them before breakfast. Where was I now? Oh yes. Advice that I give to you now is love yourself, love the people in your life and "slow down and smell the roses."
