Tips on How to Develop a Long-Lasting Relationship

Almost every man or woman is looking to find that special someone in their life, and there really is a perfect match for everyone in the world. But even if you've found your soul mate there's bound to be some problems in your relationship from time to time. Fortunately there are plenty of great methods you can use to make the time spent with your loved one a little easier and less stressful.

In order to make the most of your relationship consider the following tips. Not only will these ideas help you lead a long and happy relationship with your significant other, but they may help with your overall mental and physical health as well.

Communicate - You've heard it time and time again; communication is the key. Of course it is important to talk to your mate and express your own feelings, but it is equally important that you listen to your loved one and be receptive to their feelings too. Once you have established an effective line of communication with your partner you can start laying the groundwork for a long-lasting relationship.

Show affection - It's the 21st century - the days of sleeping in separate beds and avoiding public contact with your mate are long gone. Today's men and women want to be desired, and they want to know they're desired as well. Don't be afraid to hold your partner's hand, hold them in your arms or even give them in a kiss.

Never forget important dates - Specific dates are used as important milestones in long-lasting relationships. Believe it or not, this holds true just as much for men as it does for women. Remember that not every occasion requires a gift, but a hand-written note or card will always bring a smile to your loved one's face.

Make time for you mate - We all have personal schedules outside of our love lives, but when you're in a serious and committed relationship you should try to fit your partner into that schedule as much as possible. This doesn't mean you have to completely pull away from your other friends and family members in order to spend time with your significant other. Instead, try to include them in activities and functions with your friends and family and your relationship is bound to grow even stronger.

Choose your arguments - Arguments, disagreements and quarrels happen in every relationship. But the most successful couples know how to turn these negative situations into a positive experience that will actually help strengthen their relationship. Knowing when to swallow your pride and bite your tongue has helped many couples stay together in the past and it will no doubt help many more in the future.

Compromise during the holidays

As you can see there are a variety of steps that can be taken in order to ensure a long-lasting relationship. Many believe that the dream of marrying a high school sweetheart or spending 50 years with the same spouse is a thing of the past, but these feats can still be achieved today with just a little bit of patience, dedication and communication.

Healthy Relationships - How to Develop Them

There are many people whose preference is to have healthy, happy relationships with the people in their lives... whether they are parent-child relationships, marriage or love relationships, family relationships, friendships, or even relationships with work colleagues. Building healthy relationships is a normal and natural desire. In fact, healthy relationships are a vital aspect of mental health, and general health and wellness. So what do we need to know about building and maintaining healthy relationships?

Let us define some of the qualities of healthy relationships:

Each person takes responsibility for their own needs
You can easily discuss conflict and differences, without blame
The relationship is important to each person involved
Each person communicates openly and honestly
Abuse is absent -- this includes physical, verbal, or emotional abuse
Each person has healthy boundaries -- can say "no" to requests without feelings of guilt

Certainly, it is important for each party in a relationship to understand, and be able to practice these aspects when interacting with others. It is my belief, however, that the key to healthy relationships is found, first, in our interactions with our Self, with our Inner Being.

What is your relationship like with your Inner Being?

Are you in conflict with yourself?
Do you ever heap blame on yourself?
Do you get angry or frustrated with yourself?
Is your relationship with your Inner Being important to you?
Do you communicate openly and honestly with your Inner Being?
Do you abuse yourself...with thoughts, or words?
Can you follow your inner guidance without feeling guilt?

If your relationship with your Inner Being is not a healthy one, then keeping up a healthy relationship with others in your life could be challenging for you. The relationship you have with your Inner Being is the most important relationship you will ever have... and every other relationship is a reflection (in some way) of that most intimate, inner one.

Do you ever feel angry or frustrated with yourself, or blame and criticize yourself? Your Inner Being never argues with you, or blames you, or gets angry or frustrated or disappointed with you... your Inner Being always beams pure, positive, love energy to you -- without exception. If you blame or criticize yourself, then you are in conflict with your Inner Being -- and you feel that tension through negative emotions.

Do you value your relationship with your Inner Being? Is it important to you to feel good, and feel happy? When you value your relationship with your Inner Being, then you make every effort you can to feel happy, and to focus your attention on thoughts that feel good when you think them.

Do you communicate honestly and openly with your Inner Being? This is as easy as tuning in to your emotions. Your emotions give you feedback about your relationship with your Inner Being...when you feel positive, happy emotions, then you are in tune with your Inner Being. Negative emotions show that you are thinking of something that does not agree with what your Inner Being knows.

Do you take time to nurture your relationship with your Inner Being? Do you nurture and soothe yourself? There are many ways you can nurture your spirit...you can meditate or listen to soothing music. You can also nurture yourself by thinking of someone you love, or taking a warm bath, or by taking a walk, or by just giving yourself permission to chill...just for a moment.

Do you abuse yourself with thoughts or words? It always feels good to receive support and encouragement from others...but we can also be supportive and encouraging toward ourselves. This can mean not asking or demanding too much of ourselves in time and effort -- by realizing that you don't have to do whatever-it-is this minute. We can applaud our efforts, and focus on what we did right (and not what went wrong).

Can you follow your Inner Guidance without feeling guilty? Do you trust your emotions and your 'gut' feelings? I have noticed that when I follow my 'gut' feelings and trust my emotions, my path always leads to new and improved experiences -- I feel inspired, and creative, and passionate, and alive.

So...what is your relationship like with your Inner Being?

If you make the effort to improve your relationship with your Inner Being, and make it a healthy one, then every other relationship in your experience will also improve, and you will enjoy healthy relationships.

Develop Your Relationship With Food

Understanding Where You Stand

What is your current relationship with food? You've heard the saying "live to eat or eat to live." How do you feel when it comes to eating? Do you feel tense or uneasy - a feeling of excitement or neutral at meal time? Do you enjoy preparing and cooking your meals? Or does a loved one cook for you? Do you sit down and take time out of your busy schedule to contemplate the food before you?

Whilst these questions may seem like ones you haven't given much thought to, you should take the time to ponder how you respond to one or a number of the questions. Your upbringing has an impact on your current relationship with food. People in English speaking countries sit down in front of TV's when eating. Religion may play a part - perhaps reciting grace before meals. Blessing the meal before you eat is an important ritual and one that continues in many cultures. Sharing a meal with loved ones is a practise I regularly advocate to clients.

Both my parents grew up abroad in non English speaking countries. They were raised in agricultural environments. My father's family were apple farmers, high in the mountains. They lived off the land. Sustainability was very much common practise sixty years ago. For they respected the land and had a great affinity with the food they prepared each day. They had regular contact with food using their hands.

My upbringing revolved around this ideal. My mother remains an amazing cook. Over the years, having read and studied hundreds of literature of nutrition, disease and illness, I have come to one conclusion about developing a relationship with food - love. Food is spiritual, nourishing to the body, mind and spirit. Food should be consumed in an environment filled with love, openness and warmth.

My mother still grows all her own vegetables and tends to her garden regularly. You'll often see the proud expression on her face when her garden bears the fruits of her labour. The neighbours often stop by on their walk to ask her for advice on growing vegetables. Her garden naturally flourishes and bears amazing vegetables and herbs on a seasonal basis.

She cooks, applying the same attitude - imparting love, joy and enthusiasm into her meals. In the Middle Eastern culture, it is accepted that one takes a great deal of pride feeding loved ones i.e. family members, friends etc. Middle Eastern people enjoy entertaining guests with sometimes over the top hospitality. It means a great deal to demonstrate their culture via food. It becomes the embodiment of who they are as a people. This is also apparent in other cultures.

My mother applies the same wisdom when preparing and cooking food. I've witnessed her in the kitchen in a trance like state when cooking - no one dares enters! She especially enjoys cooking for loved ones, since she finds an expression of love via the food she prepares and cooks. She holds a strong relationship with food, making regular contact from the moment it is put into the ground to being served at dinner. One develops a strong spiritual connection with food in this manner. It is nurtured and evolved to the point others share in its flavours and benefits.

Making a Decision to Move Forward

Whilst I'm not suggesting that everyone begin cultivating a garden, I do suggest you develop a positive relationship with food. A possible reason for the increase in the obesity epidemic in our culture is attributed to losing our relationship with food. Look back at what you consumed yesterday and recall how many packaged items you ate? Compare this with the fresh, organic produce you consumed? Now, unless you live on a farm I guarantee that at least 60% or more of the food you ate were packaged items.

Know this - there is no relationship with packaged food. You take the food out of the wrapper or box, add ingredients to it and/or shove it into a microwave or oven for cooking. If you're like most people, you're impatient and take the absolute shortest time possible to prepare and cook it, subsequently shoving it down your mouth. Later complaining of digestive related ailments as a result. Our genetic disposition is not geared toward this type of feeding pattern.

It's no wonder antacids and other drug based products are the leading sales for digestive complaints. It's like pouring cement down a drain expecting it to clear up. This post is intended to help you ask the right questions about your relationship with food. If you begin taking action in the right direction, then you'll have done well.

Remember health is NOT an event as mentioned previously - it is a process. You NEED to develop a relationship with what, when and how you nourish your body. Each decision you make brings you closer or further away from health. From achieving your ideal weight and your ideal life. Yes it is hard to say no to foods which you like. Those foods which are rich in calories, but dead in vitality. I'm not proclaiming to be a preacher about the perils of junk food. I occasionally enjoy such treats when my body calls for it. I don't make it a habit and nor should you.

Your relationship with food should become a journey, not a destination. For a journey allows you to learn what works and what doesn't. You become someone along the way. You develop processes which enrich your life and your body. You develop character and substance, which ultimately means junk food, serves little or no place in your life - much like a destructive relationship.

Wherever you are in your journey with food, make a conscious decision to move forward in the right direction. The right direction will be one that will allow you to reach your ideal body weight. It will be one which allows your authentic self to shine forth; for in choosing the right foods you choose your destiny.

You will become congruent with what you eat, how you move, sleep, breathe and think. You will BECOME someone worthy of living a rich, abundant life since you made an effort to throw out that which no longer served your greatest potential. That is what I mean when I talk about awakening your authentic self and developing a meaningful relationship with food.
